Ascanio vs Moskos

Sometime before the game starts on Tuesday, the Pirates will recall Evan Meek.  The corresponding move is a small mystery and a bit of a conundrum.  This problem is a good one to have, where the team has more players they want than spots to give them.  Basically, the decision is really going to come down to Jose Ascanio vs Daniel Moskos.

Moskos is a lefty, which the bullpen is short on, and has performed reasonably well.  He definitely has a future in the Pirates bullpen, possibly sooner rather than later.  His biggest negative right now is that he has options left.  On the other hand, Ascanio will have to be released and clear waivers.  Ascanio looks a little wild and needs some more time in the minors to find himself.  I think he can be an effective middle reliever at some point in his career.

The reality is that whatever move the Pirates make, it won’t matter.  The player that makes it through this move will probably have to be moved in a few weeks when Ross Ohlendorf comes off the DL.

I’m not totally sold on which move to make.  On one hand, I want to stick with the best player, Moskos.  On the other, I don’t want to lose a player if I don’t have to.  For me, it comes down to whether I think Moskos is ready right now.  If he is then the Pirates should give him every opportunity to keep playing.  If he is not, then he would get sent down at some point anyways.  I’m guessing he is not quite there yet based upon his limited usage, hence leaving the door open for Ascanio to prove himself a little longer.
